AI, Data and Robotics Forum: How do we use data spaces to solve real problems Workshop

Description

The experts panel discussion will discuss innovative forms of collaboration in the smart city
ecosystem from the perspective of the open governance paradigm. Many successful use
cases of smart cities involve a multitude of actors engaged in public and private
consumption, production, education, research, entertainment, and professional activities
(Appio et al. 2019). A multi-stakeholder ecosystem perspective on urban innovation
frameworks has gained traction and is considered to benefit society. Our approach points to
the logic of a cooperation model associated with the design and development of innovative
city services, which complements the public sector with companies, academia, and citizens.
Innovation management literature has long discussed the role played by innovation
ecosystems in stimulating innovation and economic growth highlighting their spatial
dimension, but less is known on smart city ecosystem, and on the conditions under which it
is possible to realise a convergence of public and private goals, as well as accomplish
economic, environmental, and social sustainability objectives. In this theoretical framework,
innovative forms of public-private engagement have been rather underdeveloped in the
definition of the concept of smart city ecosystem. The open governance paradigm (Meijer
2019) focuses specifically on the element of collaboration for the production of information
around shared values.
