EU countries to implement updated building directive by May 2026

EU Member States are required to transpose the revised Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) into national or regional legislation by May 2026. This milestone marks a significant step in the European strategy to improve both energy efficiency and indoor environmental quality across the building sector.

The latest revision of the EPBD places a stronger focus on indoor air quality (IAQ) and ventilation, alongside traditional energy performance targets. New and renovated buildings will be required to meet stricter standards, including the monitoring of CO₂ and particulate levels and the adoption of smart, demand-controlled ventilation systems.

These measures are expected to contribute to the development of healthier, smarter, and more energy-efficient buildings, while supporting the EU’s broader ambition to achieve a zero-emission building stock in the coming decades.
