Indoor Plants: Your Secret Allies for Healthier Indoor Air

The key to healthier indoor air might be right under your nose – house plants. A recent scientific study conducted by our project partners at the Institute of Environmental Biotechnology (Graz University of Technology) in Graz, Austria, has highlighted that these leafy companions not only enhance the aesthetics of our living spaces but also play a vital role in purifying indoor air.

While scientists have long recognised plants' natural defence mechanism against harmful invaders, this groundbreaking study demonstrates that the microbiota of house plants can extend its protective powers to humans. The focus of the research was on two common house plants, the spider plant (Chlorophytum comosum) and the banana plant (Musa acuminata).

The study unveiled a diverse community of microorganisms residing on these houseplants, capable of inhibiting human-pathogenic bacteria. Notable defenders in this microbial world include Sphingomonas and Bacillus bacterial species, renowned for their ability to ward off plant pathogens and, surprisingly, to combat opportunistic human pathogens. Additionally, the research highlighted that the microbiota on house plants differs from the surrounding surfaces, emphasising the unique features of plant surfaces.

In essence, house plants go beyond mere aesthetic appeal; they serve as natural air purifiers and protectors against harmful pathogens.
