Workbook for Children (Ages 12-18) Discovering Indoor Air Quality

An evidence-driven, hands-on introduction to indoor air quality for children

This workbook is the first educational resource developed within EDIAQI, designed to help children explore what indoor air quality is, why it matters, and how it affects their everyday lives.

Through simple explanations, visual elements, and interactive activities, the workbook guides students in discovering the pollutants present in indoor environments, where they come from, and how they influence both health and the environment. Most importantly, it encourages children to understand that they can play an active role in improving the quality of the air they breathe.

What students will learn

Using this workbook, learners are introduced to:

  • the concept of air quality and why it is important indoors
  • common indoor pollutants such as CO₂, ozone, VOCs, and particulate matter (PM)
  • pollution sources and everyday activities that influence indoor air
  • practical actions that help maintain good indoor air quality

Learning by doing

The workbook includes a wide range of interactive activities, such as:

  • researching a specific pollutant
  • measuring CO₂ concentration
  • identifying pollution sources through games and puzzles
  • experimenting with surface cleaning and filtration
  • creating a simple DIY filter

These activities are designed to foster curiosity, critical thinking, and awareness, making indoor air quality a tangible and relatable topic for children.
